Sail to the Gulf Islands and Victoria, B.C., With Pioneer Travel
|
In July, L&C alumni, parents, friends, family, and students will sail on a schooner to the San Juan and Gulf Islands and then on to Victoria, British Columbia! Led by Stephen Dow Beckham, professor emeritus of history, this trip is part of the college’s Pioneer Travel Program, which offers opportunities for lifelong learning. In 2014, the Watzek Library Special Collections acquired a 15th-century illuminated book of manuscripts, which has proven to be the perfect object for interdisciplinary study. Students in both Chemistry 365 and English 281 have been working together to answer questions about the book’s origins and past. Read more about this fascinating project.

For five days over winter break, 30 Lewis & Clark students joined faculty and mentors to learn about entrepreneurship from the ground up, connecting their liberal arts learning with tools for identifying problems and developing solutions. The Winterim program is organized by the Bates Center for Entrepreneurship and Leadership. Read more about the students’ experience.

Assistant Professor Reiko Hillyer Awarded Interdisciplinary Grant
|

Assistant Professor of History Reiko Hillyer has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Whiting Foundation to support her interdisciplinary project, “Theatre From the Inside-Out: Illuminating Mass Incarceration.” The grant will enrich Hillyer’s course Crime and Punishment in U.S. History, where she brings 16 Lewis & Clark students together with incarcerated students at the Columbia River Correctional Institution (CRCI). Hillyer is collaborating on the project with Assistant Professor of Theatre Rebecca Lingafelter, who will lead several sessions culminating in a staged performance at CRCI. Read more.
