Dear Pio Parents,

Hello from the Bookstore! We hope that this email finds you well and ready for a little R&R over the holiday season. And hopefully, a little information from us regarding your students' textbook rentals will make your holiday season a little less stressful.

Your students' rented books do need to come back to us as soon as possible. We have tried to be proactive with communications to students, but we know sometimes things slip through the cracks, so please see below for a communication that was sent out to students on December 7th. We also gave them fliers with return information when they purchased the books, and posted reminders on social media and throughout campus a few weeks prior to Thanksgiving.

Let us know if you have any questions.

I would also like to take this time to say - Whew! Congratulations! We did it- we made it through the semester! Students did such a great job!

Happy Holidays from the Bookstore!

Warmly,
Melanie

Dear Pios,

We hope that your semester has gone well and these last couple of weeks of classes are going smoothly!

From the amount of emails that came in over the weekend, it is clear you are ready to get rid of your books (or will very soon be!). So, here is a little how to/FAQ:

If you live on campus or in the Portland area:

  • You can return your books in person. We are open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 2 PM, except for holidays. Check ahead of time if you have any questions.
  • If you prefer contactless returns, use the drop off table in front of the bookstore. Please be sure to fill out the return form on the table when you leave your books. For the safety of your books, please drop them during business hours.
  • If you need a time outside of business hours, please let us know; we are here 8 AM to 4 PM most days and can set up an appointment. You can also mail your books back to us. Please see information below.
  • If you have been or might have been exposed to COVID-19, do not come to campus! CONTACT US TO DISCUSS YOUR BEST OPTIONS. That doesn't mean you're off the hook; you still have to return your books.

If you live outside of the Portland area or are in quarantine:

  • You should send your books back using the UPS label provided in the rental reminder emails.
  • Reminder emails have been sent or will be sent on 11/25/2020, 12/6/2020, 12/13/2020, 12/17/2020. If you don't see an email from us, check your promotions or spam folders on these dates.
  • You can also create a label here if you can't find the email. You will need your order number and the email address used to place the order.
  • You should have your books in the mail no later than 12/17. There may be shipping delays and we will still have to open and check in approximately 900 packages coming from you all AND it's the holidays. Be proactive, not reactive.

Uh-oh, I left my books in my dorm:

  • Your options are limited if you didn't read the insert that we stapled to your purchase receipt. For your convenience, here is the information from the insert again.

Refund and rental policy – Fall 2020

  • A full refund will be given, with a receipt, until FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th.
  • Between 9/7/2020 and 9/11/2020, a full refund will be given, with a receipt, and provided proof of an official schedule change.
  • ALL TEXTBOOK SALES ARE FINAL AFTER FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH.
  • Textbooks and access codes must be in original, saleable condition with package components unopened and software unused. Do not open shrink-wrapped books or open access codes until after you go to class and are POSITIVE you will stay in the class.

Normal wear and tear is expected. You may write in and highlight in your books, but the book must be reusable. If you are a heavy note-taker in your books, you may want to consider purchasing rather than renting. DO NOT LET YOUR BOOKS GET WET. Books with water/food damage or a broken spine are the biggest cause of fees at the end of the semester. If your books receive damage beyond normal wear and tear, you will have to pay to replace them – just like any sort of rental.

End of semester –

  • Your books are due on the last day of finals. If you are still in Portland, you should (barring any Covid restrictions) be able to bring your books to the store to check in. Don’t just drop them off, we won’t know who they belong to. If you have left the area, you can mail your books back – you can make a label on our website and then we will be able to track it. Your books should be postmarked no later than December 17th, 2020.
  • If you want to sell the textbooks that you purchased (DO NOT SELL YOUR RENTAL BOOKS), we will have a link up on our website and you can contact us with any questions. We might be buying back in store, but it could change based on the pandemic.

International Students – we recommend you buy your books. We don’t have an easy way for you to return your books from outside of the U.S.

Soooo, you can either buy out your rentals and try to resell them back to us at the end of spring semester, you can try to contact your friendly RA and beg them for help, or you can pay the late fees. If you choose to pay the late fees, we can partially refund them at the start of next semester as long as your books are in good condition. The cut-off date for rental fee refunds will be 1/27/2021, no exceptions. You will still have to pay the late fee, but we can refund the replacement fee. Please understand that while we may be able to refund the replacement fee, the late fee is nonrefundable.

Please try to be proactive with your textbook returns. I want to help you out, but I also field hundreds of emails, so try to do a little research before you ask me what your order number is. But DO reach out if you need help. It is better to communicate potential issues up front.

While we have your attention - now is a great time to order your books for next semester! The earlier you order, the more likely you are to get used books. We will need to be socially distancing when you return to the area, so you will need to order your books for pick up or delivery again.

From all of us at the bookstore, warmest wishes for the happiest of holidays.
