Physics Alumni Cofound a 3D Printing Startup

John Kray BA ’17 and Zach Rose BA ’18 have joined forces to provide affordable 3D printing services through their company, Hydra Research. The Lewis & Clark physics department bought their Nautilus 3D printer this semester, and students in the advanced physics lab are using it for projects, including printing avionics components for a model rocket and gears for a robot.

Board of Alumni Welcomes New Members

At its fall meeting on October 27, the board welcomed six new members: Katie Byrnes BA ’79, Erik Jensen BA ’81, Hongda Jiang BA ’08, Ryan Lockard BA ’07, Richard Sames BA ’12, and Marnie Troska BA ’98. We give thanks to outgoing board members Cathy Kirkland BA ’75, MAT ’83, JD ’87; Aukeem Ballard BA ’11, MAT ’12; Chris Wood BA ’82; Jim Robertson BA ’78; Josh Heim BA ’01; and Mary Devlin BA ’68, MAT ’71 for their years of service and contributions to L&C.

Divesting From Fossil Fuels: A Progress Report

Lewis & Clark’s study of and commitment to sustainability and the natural environment is tied to our unique place in the world. In February 2018, Lewis & Clark's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to divest from fossil fuel holdings in the endowment. The board committed to full divestment from the college’s publicly traded investment strategies before December 31, 2022. Learn about our progress thus far.

Recent Alumna Joins The New York Times

Emma Grillo BA ’17 has gone from features editor at the student-run Pioneer Log to a staffer in The New York Times newsroom, putting into action skills from her time in the classroom and on off-campus programs. In addition to her staff writing for the Times, her freelance work covering tech, arts, and culture regularly appears in national publications.

Alumna Awarded EPA Award for Environmental Educators

Anne McHugh BA ’10 has been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2019 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators for her work as a science teacher at Portland’s Franklin High School. One of only 11 winners—and the only one from the Pacific Northwest—her teaching spans from arachnid biodiversity to aquaponics systems, allowing students to collaborate in innovative research with NASA.
