Of Mummified Crocodiles and Ancient Court Records: A Window on Jewish Legal Reasoning in Greco-Roman Egypt
Presented by Paul S. Wright Professor of Christian Studies Rob Kugler
When Greeks and Romans ruled ancient Egypt, legal documents discarded from notary offices were often recycled as mummy wrappings for the crocodiles sacred to the Egyptian Sobek cult. In this presentation we’ll take a look at some legal complaints filed by Jews living in Egypt recovered from one such mummyland discovery in the bargain that this mummy and these Jews can teach us something about identity-maintenance in multicultural contexts.

Professor Weissman explains how a scientific method called “Brainbow” can be used to study the brain. She color-codes living cells with multicolor fluorescent proteins, and illustrates how the brain forms in tiny, transparent zebrafish embryos.

A devastating “megathrust” earthquake off the Pacific Northwest coast could happen at any time, and residents must learn to prepare for, survive, and thrive in the aftermath of such an event. We are developing video games to investigate their own effectiveness as risk communication tools and to elucidate what drives earthquake preparedness behavior among PNW residents ages 18-29.
