Manor House summer2

Dear Parents,

The below message was sent to L&C students, faculty, and staff earlier today. President Wiewel asked that it be shared with you as well. In the time since it was sent, the air quality on campus has deteriorated significantly. All classes and campus activities scheduled to start at 3 p.m. or later today, and all day tomorrow, Friday September 11, are to be conducted online to the fullest extent possible. If online is not possible, then all such classes and campus activities are canceled.

Dear Lewis & Clark Community,

We are closely monitoring the wildfire situation in Oregon, including the air quality on campus. We know that numerous employees and other members of our community have been directly impacted. As a community, it is essential that we support each other through such difficult times.

The good news is that the fires are not near to or threatening our campus. The wind has decreased and temperatures are expected to trend cooler in the coming days. However, the fires in Oregon and across the West are significantly impacting air quality.

We expect air quality may be worse tomorrow. We’ll notify you as soon as possible if circumstances warrant modifying normal campus operations due to poor air quality. We will use the same notification tools as when snow or ice impact campus operations.

Although there is not any active fire threatening our campus, conditions on campus and in the surrounding woodlands are very dry. Strict adherence to the prohibition on burning materials, use of fireworks, and smoking is critically important. Please help protect the campus and surrounding areas.

The current air quality level may be unhealthy for sensitive individuals. Students with a health condition that may be exacerbated by the smoke and who need to avoid going outdoors or going to class should inform their faculty or academic dean, as appropriate. Medical consultation is available during working hours through the Health Service (503-768-7165), and after-hours through our nurse consultation service (1-844-915-2069). Employees who cannot come to work or otherwise perform their normal work activities should contact their supervisor or Human Resources.

Thank you, once again, for your cooperation and patience as we navigate these unprecedented times.

Sincerely,

Andrea Dooley
Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Operations
