Manor House summer2

Dear Parents,

The following information was sent to L&C students earlier today.

Dear Students,

We have received questions about potential risks to the campus in light of the wildfires and evacuation orders in Clackamas County. Last night I provided an update to residential students confirming that there are no evacuation orders at any level (1, 2 or 3) in Multnomah County, where Lewis & Clark is located. That remains true.

The Multnomah County Office of Emergency Management web page is a good source for current information regarding the wildfire threat. Their 4:30 p.m. update (Friday) states:

The threat of wildfire is not increasing in Multnomah County. Clackamas Fire and Portland Fire & Rescue confirm the fires in Clackamas County are not moving in a way that would shift any part of Multnomah County to an evacuation level. As a result, there are no orders of evacuation in Multnomah County.

If the threat level in Southwest Portland were to increase and necessitate an evacuation, we would call upon a shuttle company that we have a relationship with to provide transportation. We have arrangements with our dining services partner Bon Appetit to provide food and water offsite if necessary. If circumstances necessitate finding alternative housing, we will work with local emergency management officials and other partners to do so, based on the conditions at that time.

Of course, air quality in the area remains poor. An air quality advisory is in effect for the entire Willamette Valley through the weekend. Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes, runny nose, aggravate heart and lung diseases, and aggravate other serious health problems. You should limit outdoor activities and follow medical advice if you have a heart or lung condition

Although the news from outlying areas is alarming and heartbreaking, we have no reason to believe there is any imminent fire threat to the campus. The wind has decreased and temperatures are expected to trend cooler in the coming days. Rain is forecast for next week. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will inform you if circumstances change.

Sincerely,

Robin Holmes-Sullivan
Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students
