Dear Lewis & Clark Community,

Tuesday’s historic guilty verdict in the trial of the former police officer who killed George Floyd is a victory for accountability. Justice is more elusive, however, as we know there are countless challenges still ahead.

While so many of us experienced sighs of relief and tears, we absolutely must continue the hard work of overcoming racism whenever and wherever we see it. We will always need to do so. As an institution, Lewis & Clark is committed to this work and to undertaking specific actions to improve our community and create an environment where all members of our community are seen, heard, and valued.

As members of the Executive Council, individually and collectively, we are encouraged by the progress and effort made in some key areas over the course of the last ten months since we announced our Institutional Commitments. At the same time, we are aware we still have a long way to go.

Here on campus, each of us can offer comfort and support to members of our community who are affected by everything that is happening in the world. Counseling Services are available to all students. Over the weekend, students may contact counseling at 503-265-7804. On weekdays during business hours, students may contact the Counseling Service at 503-768-7160. Students living on campus can also seek support through their Resident Advisors and Area Directors. Faculty and staff who wish to speak with a counselor are encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-433-2320.

As always, if you or someone you know has experienced violence, please contact Campus Safety, available 24 hours a day at 503-768-7777. You may also use the Bias Assessment and Response Team (BART) form to report concerns.

Know that as the leadership of this institution we struggle with when to send messages that address national issues, how much to say, and how fast to move. We don’t always agree on how to proceed. But know that we are united in our care for everyone in our community and in our belief in our College’s ability to make the world a better place. Thank you for joining with us in this vital work.
