Dear Parents,

We recently sent your student the message below. We would like to share it with you as well.

With the end of the semester less than two months away, we imagine you’re equally focused on completing your studies and on the milestone of commencement. We want to make sure your graduation is as safe and special as possible.

As you know, given the COVID-related restrictions, we have had to contend with all year--and future uncertainty--we approached commencement planning with a very high level of caution. However, after hearing from a number of seniors and seeing positive trends on campus and in Multnomah County, we have decided to modify our commencement plans in ways we believe will add to the well-earned celebration of your achievements.

Rather than one day of commencement, we now plan to celebrate commencement over the span of a week, with a mix of in-person and virtual events. Below is a proposed schedule with more details. This expanded approach will allow you to visit in smaller groups with your favorite faculty, fellow seniors, and supportive staff.

Here’s a quick summary of what will change and what won’t from our previous plans:

What Will Change

  • We are adding a number of small departmental events and in-person gatherings.
  • There will be multiple photoshoot locations with President Wiewel, VP Robin Holmes-Sullivan, Dean Suttmeier, and members of the CAS faculty on campus during the day of commencement.

What Will Not Change

  • No family or guests will be allowed on campus.
  • The main commencement ceremony on May 8, with speakers, will remain virtual.

Please know that we’re working on the details of these new events and will communicate more very soon. These changes don’t get us to a place of normal, of course, but we hope that you will appreciate the opportunity to enjoy safe, in-person activities with the people on campus who have meant the most to you over the years.

Thanks, as always, for your understanding.

Robin Holmes-Sullivan, Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students

Bruce Suttmeier, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
